We are building the healthiest place possible to live, and not just healthy for you, but also for Mother Earth. Trinity Commons is being built to LEED-NC Silver standards set by the USGBC. But certifications aren't the be-all end-all, so we are doing some things that aren't part of the certification system but are just the right thing to do. Some of our sustainable apartment features are below.

Infill location: Trinity Commons's location near Duke Unversity Hospital is a high density site that is within walking distance of many basic services, employment, restaurants, etc. This will reduce dependency on automobile usage.

Hit the Road Jack: Trinity Commons is within a block of two major bus lines!

We promote bicycle usage by providing plentiful bike storage racks.

Preferred parking spaces for Low Emitting and Fuel Efficient Vehicles totaling 5% of available spaces.

We will have recharging stations for your new Nissan Leaf when you finally get it!

Lovable Low-impact landscaping: we planted native and adaptable drought-resistant plant species to cut down on water usage by 50%

We are Sod free!! As good as it looks, there isn't anything natural or eco-friendly about sod. So long same old same old!

We like islands, but not the heat island effect: To reduce the heat island effect, we provide shade-rific landscaping, are placing most of the parking deck under a light colored surface as well as putting a white membrane on the roof to minimize the build-up of heat from solar gain.

Dim the Lights: We designed the site lighting to control the amount of light that leaves the site and disturbs the neighbors. This improves nighttime visibility and night sky viewing and reduces the impact on our nocturnal friends.

We are providing high levels of lighting controls in the residential and common spaces to allow occupants to control their lighting needs.

The hallways may seem dim, but that's because we're using the most energy-efficient lightbulbs to light Trinity Commons.

HVACool: Our customized HVAC system helps reduce ozone depletion by requiring zero use of CFC based refrigerants in the HVAC and refrigerant systems.

IAQ's not just another TLA: It's Indoor Air Quality, and we got it! Not only is this a non-smoking environment (sorry, take it outside- at least 25 feet from the building) but we constructed the building using a strict IAQ Plan taking extra care to use low-VOC paints and carpet adhesive, extra ecofriendly insulation, sealants and caulk to make sure every vent is sealed properly, all to let you sleep better at night.

We've also increased ventilation by 30% over typical standards.

H2 low: We already mentioned using hardy plants that take 50% less water. We're also using low flow water fixtures including dual flush toilets and waterless urinals (not as bad as you think!)

It's all about the Material, Girl. We are using rapidly renewable bamboo flooring, low VOC materials and several products with recycled content. Reuse it or lose it, we say.
